2010-11 Season In One Post

This blog will be the official ship's log of MOMENTOUS -- the 1983 S&S-designed Catalina 38, hull #230. Hopefully it will document many successful cruises, day sails, and beer runs!

But before 2012 get's underway, let's get caught up on 2010/11 just to make it official.

The 2010-11 Season In Just One Entry:
Last year was the first year with the new boat... and a successful year it was.

Here's how we found her: As SPIRIT, tucked wayyyyy in the back at Holiday Point Marina, on the South River in Edgewater, MD. She had some minor keel damage, and chalked out teak, but a sexy new paint job, full electronics, strong engine and sail inventory. What more do you need? See hull #230's story here.

Delivery Day: A wet one in April. Out of Selby Bay, through the mouth of the South River, up the Chesapeake Bay, into the Patapsco River then into Old Rode Bay and Jones Creek to Young's Boatyard.

Rename & Relaunch: Some minor repairs to the keel, a new back stay adjuster, freshly refinished teak, a good scrub and most importantly, a NEW NAME... that is not only a play on the name of our previous boat, MOMENTUM, but an indication of the weight of the occasion: The first "official / legal" father & son partnership, MOMENTOUS!

Young's Boatyard has a nice write up on our renaming ceremony:
It was a "Momentous" occasion for captain and crew when they ceremoniously renamed their Catalina 38 here at the boatyard! There was purging, invoking and sacrificing going on... Seems that a compass, some old gear, steamed crabs and a supply of rum (preferred with the crabs instead of champagne!) are all that are needed to appease the dgods and guarantee smooth sailing!!!
An entertaining link to Renaming Ceremony.

Summer of Sunny Day Sails & Rainy Cruises: After refinishing the cabin sole, the salon table top, making some cockpit cushions, a bimini top and general housewarming things, MOMENTOUS spent her summer turning heads on sunny day sails / beer runs, and two rainy weekend cruises. Some photos below, or video here.

The Winches: Boy, a set of self-tailing winches would be a serious upgrade! No problem, I'll just find a set of used ones online! Yup, found a SWEET set of alloy Lewmar 48st racing winches, and for a great price too! Can't wait to put them on, shouldn't be a big deal... they should fit no problem. NOPE!  My mistake to think that the old 483speeds that are on the boat now would be the same size and bolt pattern of new winches. They're the same power ratio, but the wrong base diameter... SO... who needs a really sweet set of light weight racing winches? Check'm out here.

Then We Met Marvin: Marvin Imhoff at Charm City Marine Canvas. After all those rainy cruises and scorching day sails, it was time for some proper canvas. After trading some website work that Marvin needed, MOMENTOUS had a proper dodger and refitted bimini top. Bring on the 2012 rainy cruises!

BTW... I HIGHLY recommend Charm City Marine Canvas for ALL of your canvas needs. Polite, totally professional.

And now she's put up for the winter! See you in April!
